The Awareness and Related Factors of University Students on Sexual Harassment

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness and related factors of university students on sexual harrassment.

Methods : The study subjects were 380 students from five universities in Pusan Metropolitan city. The data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire between July 1 and July 20, 2002. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA with Scheffe¢¥test, and stepwise multiple regression analysis in SPSS program were used for data analysis.

Results : Comparing the students general ideas, experiences, and awareness regarding sexual harassment with the students general characteristics revealed several findings. The point earned from fourth year students general ideas of sexual harassment is 20.08, which was higher than that from third year students 17.45. male students sexual harassment experience as an assaulter were 8.85 compared to the point 4.81 from female students. There was no statistical difference in all the characteristics of students who experience sexual harassment. Male students scored 35.0 points for sexual harassment awareness, which was lower than that of female students 44.38 points. In particular, higher scores in sexual harassment awareness were observed in cases wherein female students account for more than 50% of the total students of an academic department than in cases wherein they account for less than 30%. The predictor of the students awareness of sexual harassment were gender and injury experience in relation with sexual harassment explained 14.2%.

Conclusions : Based on the results, The programs to prevent sexual harassment should be developed according to the level of each gender. It is also necessary to study and confirm variables that may affect the students awareness of sexual harassment, aside from those identified in this study.
